Help Your Child Improve Their Study by Taking High-Quality Notes

There's no denying that notes taken during regular lessons and lectures help students to study and prepare for exams and projects. However,  your study can only be as good as the quality of your notes. Knowing just how important high-quality notes are to a student, The Tutoring Center, Houston TX has some tips to share which can help.

Make Sure You Have the Right Tools

The first step to taking useful notes is to have what you need on hand:
  • Different colored pens to easily differentiate notes
  • Standard lead pencil
  • A separate notebook for each subject
  • Ruler to help draw diagrams
  • Highlighters to draw your attention to crucial information

Don't Take Dictation

The biggest mistake made by students is to try to write everything that the teacher or lecturer says. It just isn't realistic. Instead, focus on key points such as names, dates, places, and contextual references. These key pieces will help to research further information after the class has finished.

Write Your Own Language

If you are still having trouble writing down everything you feel that you need, consider using shorthand or create your own version. This will help you to write down recurring words or phrases easily and save time.

Keep It Organized and Clean

Now that you have everything you need to start taking notes, remember to keep it all clean and organized. Consider these tips:
  • If you start a new note, start a new page! This will stop you from mixing up your notes and make it easier to find notes when you need them.
  • You aren't going to benefit from reading 'The blue monkey wore a pink box' when it should read 'The solar system is made up of a number of stars and planets'. Pay attention to how well you write, making sure that you can actually read it afterward.
  • If your notes continue over to the next page, number the top of each page.
  • Add the date and the topic to the top of each new page or note.
  • Remember to leave space after your notes to help you add or modify while you are reviewing.
