How You Can Help Your Child Achieve Their Goals

Now that children have reached or are reaching the midway point in the school year, it can be easy for them to lose sight of their goals, leading to a report card filled with grades lower than you know they could have achieved. Below are some tips from The Tutoring Center, Houston TX to help you keep your child motivated.

Revisit Their Goals

If your child set goals at the start of the school year, now is the perfect time to revisit them to see how everything is tracking. During this time, take a look at the progress your child has made and whether they are likely to successfully reach each goal. If, for whatever reason, achievement doesn’t seem likely, be sure that you don’t let your child simply disregard the goal. Instead, make changes either to the goal itself or look for ways to help them pick up the slack and reach their original goal.

Introduce New Goals

If it looks like your child has been performing better than expected and is likely to reach their goals with ease, don’t be afraid to discuss adding new goals to their list or extending the ones they are already working toward. As an example, if they are easily managing to study an extra hour each week on a subject they struggle with, increase it by another 30 minutes or even another hour. The more they study, the better their results will be. Of course, if your student is managing their time well, consider extra-curricular goals, such as learning to play an instrument or learning a new language to help bolster their skill-set and strengthen their college applications.

Include Incentives

There is a fine line between bribing your children to succeed and incentives. Instead of large ticket items as rewards, look for more educationally oriented incentives. As an example, if they stay on track to improve their knowledge of history, reward them with a visit to a museum which focuses on the subject. On the same subject, if your child is struggling to read a history textbook, look for a movie on the topic and enjoy a family movie night.
